How Many Pictures Will I Get?
How Many Pictures Will I Get?
There is a chance that I have been asked this question about as many times as I’ve pressed the shutter button on my camera…. ok, maybe that was a bit dramatic, but you get where I’m going with this.
We’re living in a society right now where everyone wants more, more more. More is better. Everyone needs to have the newest, the best, the most, from clothing to cell phones, to gaming consoles, to pictures. No wonder they are coming out with upgrades and new items faster than I can even upgrade my 4 year old apple phone (I still have the 6 plus…). People are willing to buy them, people want to have the newest, the best, the fastest, the most expensive. But why do we need to have the most number of pictures?
Think about it, what are you going to do when your photographer gives you 500 images from your 30-60 minute session with them? Are you going to print them and hang them all on your wall? Probably not. The average family will hang 3-5 images from their ENTIRE session in their home.
Are you going to create an album and include each of those 500 images? Again, chances are slim. Even the best labs and the biggest albums only hold about 200 images and those are pretty well crammed in there.
So why do we feel like we need to have it all? I don’t know about you, but I would rather have 10 stellar, jaw dropping, must hang on the wall images that wow me every time I see them than 100 that are just “ok”.
As a photographer, you can imagine I’ve been asked a few times how many finished images will be given after our session. And to be honest, I can’t answer you with a specific number! I know that sounds crazy, like this is my JOB. How can I not answer this? Hear me out…
Each family, each child, each session is unique. Your family may warm right up to me and feel immediately at ease and as though we have known each other for years, laughing, playing together and telling jokes. This allows me to candidly photograph your family, your interactions, your dynamic with ease. The emotions are readily available and just waiting to be captured. You may flow so easily from one given task to the next, kids playing ring around the rosie, racing each other down the water line, splashing in the waves. You may receive 50 images from our short 30 minutes together.
Or, your children may need a little more time to warm up to me. I mean, after all, I am a stranger they are meeting for the first time, and although you and I have been conversing for months and getting to know each other over social media, your children have not. They may need more snuggles from you. They may cling a little tighter to your legs than normal. Or maybe the ocean is a bit rougher than anticipated and they are a little nervous. I can absolutely work with this scenario, and quite love it. The emotion is there, the love and tenderness are evident and I am perfectly content photographing every second if it. But I know deep down, you want a few traditional, posed, happy and smiling pictures. Who doesn’t?! So we have to try a little harder, spend a little more time without the camera in everyones face and getting to know each other. Building that rapport. Talking and getting to know each other. I can’t tell you how long this will take. I can’t tell you it will always be a success. But I CAN tell you that I won’t give up. And that you will have a gallery full of love and emotion at this very stage of your lives. There may not be as much candidness, running, twirling and splashing, so you may receive 30 images from our short 30 minutes together.
What I CAN tell you, is that every single image you receive from me after our time together will be hand-selected BY ME. I was there, so I am aware of the emotions taking place during each image. I will toss out the “bad shots” that include blinking, mid-sentence faces, awkward faces, your hair in your face and any duplicates. Every image that “makes the cut” will then be edited, one-by-one BY ME. Honestly. I love this part. This is where I take the vision I had while photographing you and your family and “finish” the product. Your images don’t truly come to life until I’ve gotten my hands on them afterwards, and this is where I make the magic happen!
So while I may not be able to guarantee you a number of finished images from our time together, I CAN guarantee that I will only give you the BEST. Images that portray your love for one another, that remind you how small your babies once were, how they looked up to you in every way, even literally. I promise you that I will never withhold images from you. I promise you that I will never hold your images hostage and ask you to pay more to receive additional images, or to do crazy things like “share this post so “client” can receive additional images from their session” (yes I have seen others do this and yes it breaks my heart). As a mother myself, I WANT you to have your images. I promise to treat you exactly as I would want to be treated as a client.
So what about when someone DOES guarantee a specific number of images? Check out what I think!
All I ask is that you trust me. Or any other photographer you choose to hire. Trust that MORE images does not mean a better EXPERIENCE or better QUALITY. Trust me when I tell you that I have your best interest at heart knowing you’ve entrusted me with your most precious memories- your family.
